CAUGHT AT LAST--- a short story

The humiliating end of Korkuvi Azi alias Mr. Kwabs, reminds me of my childhood experience at Vodza a fishing village near Keta.Though I was a young boy then, I was  conscious of the things around me and the  turns of events.

One sultry Saturday, we heard the sound of the gong-gong.It was Kpotivi the town-crier.His message went loud and clear--a thief had sneaked into an old woman's hut and finding nothing valuable, bolted away with her only pot of palm nut soup. The old woman's appeal the town-crier had added was that the thief should be kind enough to return her only cooking pot. Some of the village folks ridiculed her saying that a pot of palm nut soup was nothing to worry about.Soon the theft case died down.

Surprisingly, the village was strucked by another theft case. This time it was Aboagye- a Kwahu- born shop owner.Thieves had entered into his shop and whisked away all his goodies.Even his old doormat Aboagye had added was not spared. And since the perpertrators could not be found, the incident was forgotten
.
Devastatingly, we encountered another robbery case.It was this same Aboagye but this time round his residence.Thieves had forced their way into his living room after poisoning his dog to death and began looting his properties into a waiting van when hell broke loose-- Aboagye's wife had come out to urinate and spotted them.In their haste, they left a refrigerator behind and sped off.

Fortunately, on a Wednesday afternoon, a young man approached the village and requested to be taken to Azi's house.A boy offered to help.On arrival, the Azi's  attitude towards the boy drew his suspicion.Going out of sight, he hid behind some piles of unused ceramics and directed his attention to their conversation. In the conversation the man said he had come down to cart away the plunder. The boy on hearing this tiptoed from his hideout and reported his experience to the Chief
.
The Chief was quick to react and ordered for the assistance of the police. They were to lay ambush at Korkuvi's residence as he and the young man had agreed on day and time for the deal.On that fateful day, at about 11pm, a mini van appeared in the village and went in the direction of  Azi's house. All this while the police laid ambush. The gates to his house opened and the van entered. The two began parking the goodies into the van when suddenly the police pounced on them.

The young man managed to escape but Korkuvi was apprehended and brought before the Chief who summoned the entire village folks to his palace.Uncovering the stolen items were included a cooking pot,an old doormat, sound systems and many others all believed to have been for the old woman and Aboagye.

As his punishment, Korkuvi Azi was striped naked, shaven bald- headed and dragged to the village square where children hooted at him.He was greatly humiliated and the weeks that passed by he grew slender and scraggy until he passed away.

Today in Vodza a song has been composed in ridiculing of any one found to involve in stealing.Azi had serve as a deterrent to others. COURTESY GOOGLE.
