CHUCHLUGA: FARMERS SCHOOLED IN BUILSA NORTH

The Adensichaap Co-operative Farmers Society in the Builsa North District in the Upper East Region has organized a stakeholder’s workshop at Chuchluga. The workshop was aimed at sharing research findings on the misapplication of Agro-chemicals by farmers in the district. It was also to address the growing phenomenon of the misuse of agro-chemicals among farmers and to conscientise them to the need to stop the practice. The Pesticide and Fertilizer Inspector, Solomon Adda, emphasized the importance of agro-chemicals in the cultivation of crops, as they do not only help crops to grow well, but also suppress the growth of weeds and insects. While acknowledging the significant role agro-chemicals play in the development of agriculture Mr. Adda noted that it is equally important to highlight the point that agro-chemicals when not properly used can affect agriculture badly.
The inspector commended Adensichaap Co-operative Farmers Society and assured them of the assembly’s support. A Service Provider for BUSAC in the Upper East Region, Hippolyte Alua, said since the association’s existence for the past seven years it has been able to minimize the misapplication of agro-chemicals in the district. He said one of the most pressing challenges facing the co-operative is illiteracy among the farmers. He noted that as part of measures to minimize the misapplication of agro-chemicals, chemical sellers have been forced to register and a workshop will soon be organized for them. He, therefore, challenged farmers who cannot read or write to consult Adensichaap Co-operative Farmers Society before applying any agro-chemical. Mr. Alua appealed to government and all stakeholders to support the co-operative.
