ACCRA: N1 HIGHWAY TO GET SOLAR LIGHTS

The George Walker Bush road, an ECOWAS highway, was expanded to reduce traffic congestion and to cut down on delays in moving from the Western parts of the country towards the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) and the Tema Port. The highway has six footbridges, thirteen bus bays and twenty-three minor junctions. Though an express way, it has recorded a number of deaths since its completion. Recently in Parliament, the major concern raised was on how the carnage on the road could be reduced. One of the strategies adopted by the Ministry of Roads and Highways, is to power all traffic lights with solar and get it off the national Grid. One has already been installed at the Dzorwulu junction. According to engineers, the solar powered system can work for two and half days without electricity and can be charged with daylight even in the rainy season. The Ministry is also constructing new pelican crossings at Abeka Lapaz and Awoshie to provide safety and prevent pedestrians from crossing at the wrong side of the road. The Deputy Minister, Mr. Isaac Adjei said, efforts to provide five additional steel footbridges and two underpasses on the highway will yield the desired results. He advised motorists to reduce their speed and drive at the recommended speed limit of 80km/h
