SPORTS: AFCON 2015, GROUP A PROFILE

The start of AFCON 2015 is days away and host Equatorial Guinea must face the tireless and menacing Gabon, Burkina Faso and Congo. Here are profiles of the teams to play in Malabo .
Host Equatorial Guinea have dodged the biggest visitors in the tournament, but find themselves in an equally tough group. The Central Africans, who learned of their host status months ago, will have to raise a formidable squad to the competition. A winning mind is needed to prepare the National Thunder for their second ever Cup of Nations.
They open their account with a match against Congo on the opening day. Gabon undoubtedly are the tournament’s dark-horses. The Black Panthers have quality up their spine from Bruno Manga in defence, Ibrahim Ndong and Andre Poko in midfield, to Malick Evouna and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in attack. A trip to Bata for Gabon’s group stage matches would indeed be worthwhile. Burkina Faso is the third team in Group A.
They are confident as Paul Put renewed his contract with the Black Stallions. The team has a balanced outfit of talented forwards, and their scoring hopes lie on Jonathan Pitroipa who led the side with six conversions during the qualifiers. The last team to look out for in the tournament is Congo. They count themselves lucky to be in Equatorial Guinea following Rwanda fielding an ineligible player in the preliminary rounds.
Nevertheless, the Red Devils are strong-willed and with talented individuals such as Prince Oniangue and Thievy Bifouma, they can spring a surprise. Catch all live matches on DSTV and Television and commentary on radio stations in Ghana.
