The University of Ghana has held a Matriculation ceremony to welcome newly admitted students into programmes on the Legon, Korle Bu and Accra City Campuses.
In his address, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, urged the new students to strive for excellence by studying diligently and avoiding all forms of vices that will inhibit their studies. He advised them to honour the sacrifice of their parents, sponsors and guardians by behaving responsibly and making the best of the opportunity they have at the University.
Prof. Aryeetey noted that for the 2015/2016 academic year the University received a total of 35,630 applications, made up of 28,665 undergraduate and 6,965 graduate applications. Out of this number, the University was able to offer admission to 18,106 students made up of 14,737 undergraduate and 3,369 graduate students out of which 8,541 registered. A total of 2,967 international students of various nationalities made up of 844 undergraduate and 310 graduate students have enrolled and are pursuing various programmes.
Earlier in a statement of welcome, the Registrar Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia noted that this year’s ceremony records the largest number of students to be matriculated in the University. She indicated that another Matriculation ceremony would be held for students in the Distance Education Programme, Sandwich programmes and other programmes which start in the second semester. Mrs. Haizel-Ashia later administered the Matriculation Oath to confer membership status on the new students in line with Article 31 of the University of Ghana Act 2010; Act 806. She informed the Matriculants that each student, whether resident or non-resident will be required to go online and electronically sign the Matriculation Oath.
Ms. Jasmine Adjei-Mensah from the Elizabeth Francis Sey Hall spoke on behalf of the freshmen and women. She admonished her colleagues to take cues from the Vice-Chancellor’s advice to stay away from illegal activities and remain focused on their studies. Ms. Adjei-Mensah, who is a student at the School of Law, signed the Matricula on behalf of her colleagues.
The Matriculation ceremony was attended by Officials of the University including the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development (RID) Prof. John O. Gyapong, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Samuel Kwame Offei, Provosts, Deans and Directors, Heads of Departments and Halls as well as other members of Convocation.
